Every single thing about this tequila is beautiful. Dark, rich and very thick. Fantastic nose – big agave, caramel, some roasted nuts – which leans toward a sharp bitter spicy earthy sweetness. Many things going on in the taste: agave, vanilla, fruit (soaked raisins?). Very complicated; hard to make it all out it’s such a complete well-formed package. A spicy warm finish, more horizontal than vertical, that keeps going. Sweet oaky notes remain once the spice starts to fade. This is a full-bodied beautiful tequila from pour to finish. A class act. And a great old-style presentation, complete with straw-lined wood box, like something salvaged from a sunken armada. Makes for a great gift.
Nose
The nose is one of the best I’ve ever smelled. It almost fills the room with a rich agave, spice and butterscotch smell.
Taste
Really dark and thick body. Coats the glass and your mouth well.
With an average sugar index of 26°-27° Bx. The highland agave absorbs Kentucky bourbon white oak to create nutty, buttery flavors with hints of flowers and fruit that achieve a coveted balance of cream and spice. Really complex and wonderful.
Finish
Aged character and an extended mellow finish interplay with fresh agave and an earthy body to create a profile classic of the Atotonilco region. Very smooth. No burn at all on the finish and the flavors stay with you nicely. The fruit comes out a little more on the finish along with a bit more oak.
Really a wonderful tequila. Well crafted, great nose, complex flavors, very drinkable. I can’t think of a valid critique of this tequila. It’s certainly worth the price because it’s overall taste is as good or better than most out there in the ultra-premium price range. If you can find it, go out and get this one.
